CSA Survey and Sign Ups!

Hey folks, long time no post! Most of you know it’s been a crazy, hectic season so pardon me for being so silent!

Two quick updates for you … First, we have a brief survey for our 2012 CSA customers. We’d like to get a little feedback from you in order to improve our program. Please take a few moments to help us out: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WQ6ZVCW.

Second, we’ve posted sign ups for our 2013 CSA program right here on the website. For information about the program and to download the information, please go to the CSA link.

See you soon!

The Inmates are Taking Over the Asylum and Other Farm Updates

For those of you who see us in Lee’s Summit on Wednesdays, you’ll notice a little change this week.  Two of our kids, Devon and Tessa, will be running the stand for me tomorrow.  They’ll be in our usual spot, but driving Devon’s red pickup.  I have a special event to set up for so the kids are handling this one.  Give them a hard time for me, would you?

For those of you who visit us in Raymore or Belton there will be another little change for the next couple of weeks.  Devon is headed out of town Thursday morning so I will be running both those stands in his absence.  It will be nice to see your friendly faces!

On other fronts, I’m sorry to report that both the cabbage and the sweet corn have completely burnt up.  I was hoping for some rain to save the day but that just hasn’t happened.  We do have late crops of both planted and if we finally see some rain in the next few weeks we will have a harvest of both toward the end of August.  Do a little rain dance for us.

This week’s CSA boxes include:

Individual – Cantaloupe, cucumber, zucchini, green pepper, tomatoes and peaches.

Partial – all of the above in larger amounts, plus sweet onion, and watermelon instead of cantaloupe.

Full – all of the above in larger amounts, plus potatoes.

At the market stands we will have cantaloupe, two varieties of watermelon, peaches, zucchini, cucumbers, bell peppers, onions, and a few pints of blackberries.  We have completely sold out of our recent batch of chickens but will have some more ready to go in a few weeks.  We also have a very limited supply of eggs – it’s just been way too hot and the hens have gone on strike!

I hope to see you all at the markets this week.  The melons are particularly sweet right now and the peaches will be coming to an end soon, so now’s the time to come on out.

Harvest Update 6/26

Since I’m writing this so late it’s technically Wednesday morning, but I just now got done with sorting and packing the harvest!  It’s no secret how hot and dry it’s been and there doesn’t seem to be much relief in sight.  This is affecting the green bean harvest quite a bit and we have very few beans this week.  The good news is we’ve got the first of the cantaloupe and eggplant and the next round of sweet corn.  I guess we can trade one for the others.  We’re still irrigating from the ponds but they’ve dropped two to three inches and both the creek and the cistern are bone dry.  If we don’t get some rain soon we may be in for some trouble.  But we’ll keep pushing forward as best we can!

CSA boxes this week include:

Individual – sweet corn, tomatoes, peaches, peppers, onions and cucumbers

Partial – all of the above in larger quantity, plus yellow zucchini and cantaloupe.

Full – all of the above in larger quantity, plus blackberries and eggplant.

The boxes are definitely getting heavier so be prepared when you pick up!

At the market stands this week we’ll have sweet corn, tomatoes, peaches, peppers, onions, zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers and a limited amount of cantaloupe, blackberries and eggplant.  Hope to see you all out there in the sun!
